A little background…

Savannah’s first TEDxCreativeCoast was held a year ago, in June. Hosted at Meddin Studios, a little over 100 people joined 18 speakers for a day of sharing, networking, learning and thinking.

It was an awesome experience - even though we didn’t have air conditioning - in June, in Savannah, in a (re-purposed meat-packing) warehouse. We featured some of Savannah’s brightest ideas, and hosted a few folks from outside the creative coast to share their innovative thoughts, as well. Last year’s event was unforgettable for many reasons, the least of which, though, was the temperature. The speakers were amazing; the staff and volunteers worked tirelessly; the energy was high and the audience enjoyed it all.

Adam Van Brimmer at the Savannah Morning News wrote an article offering a little insight into pulling off our second event. After you check that out, be sure to buy your tickets and join us next Friday, May 13th at the Jepson Center for a full day of ideas, innovation and inspiration.

About TEDx

x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to organize local, independent TED-like events around the world; and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

TEDxCreativeCoast Line-Up

On May 13, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Savannah will host the second annual TEDxCreativeCoast, at the magnificent Jepson Center for the Arts, 207 W. With a diverse group of speakers committed to the event, and following TED’s celebrated format, the 2011 TEDxCreativeCoast event will be a day of brief (18 minutes or less), carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances on a wide range of subjects related to the theme of the conference, “Inspiring Innovation.”  This year’s conference will host professors, entrepreneurs, CEOs, authors, designers, performers, community activists and more with the intent to foster learning, inspiration and wonder and to provoke conversations that matter.

TEDxCreativeCoast is a natural extension of where the city is and wants to be. With that in mind, the organizers are excited to announce a line-up of speakers who are, in their own ways, all tied to Savannah and the creative coast.
